G. Roger Sunada, 45, passed away Sunday, December 3, 2000. He successfully completed his mission here on earth, and returned to his loving Father in Heaven, following a valiant but brief fight with Multiple Myeloma (cancer of the bone marrow) Roger was born Oct. 5, 1955, in Logan, Utah to George and Susan Sunada.
Roger attended Logan City Schools, graduated from Logan High School in 1973, and attended Utah State University with an Air Force ROTC Scholarship. He graduated from USU with a Bachelors of Landscape Architecture and received a Masters of Science from the Air Force Institute of Technology. In 1979 Roger sent a letter of proposal for marriage to Sheryl Anderson, a friend from the class of '73. She accepted and they were married in the Logan Temple. The blessing of having children has been a precious and wonderful experience. Grant and Christine were loved deeply by their Dad. Grant is currently serving as a missionary in the Taiwan Taipei Mission.
Roger was a lover of the outdoors, avid back-packer and skier. He was an Eagle Scout, a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow, a Ranger at Philmont Scout Ranch and had recently been awarded the Silver Beaver for his great service to the Boy Scouts of America.
Roger was a Gulf War Veteran and a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserves.
During his active duty military career of 16 years, he served as a Civil Engineer and Squadron Commander in the Untied States Air Force. He was highly decorated and had been awarded the Bronze Star along with many other medals and recognitions.
Roger was a convert and valiant member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served faithfully in many callings in the Church throughout the world, but especially enjoyed being a loving home teacher . Roger truly exemplified the Savior and his teachings through his quite and humble manner.
Roger was currently the Director for Environmental Health and was chairman of the Bear River Board of Health, a member of the Solid Waste Association of Utah, the Society of American Military Engineers, and the American Society of Landscape Architects.
Instead of grieving for Roger, sit outside and look at the great mountains in our view. Soak in the beauty that surrounds us. Then say a kind word, or do a kind deed for those you see, whether it be friends or family.
That is what would make him smile the most.
A special thank you to Dr. Michael Stones, Dr. Sandra Buys, the nurses, doctors, and staff of 5-North at the University of Utah Medical Center and all those who offered service of any kind. Much gratitude is extended for every thought and prayer that was offered in Roger's behalf. No small kindness went unnoticed.
Roger is survived by his wife Sheryl, children Grant and Christine, parents George and Susan Sunada, Logan; sisters; Sheila and Cheryl, and many other loved ones.
Funeral services will be held in the 28th Ward Chapel, Logan East Stake Center, 1450 East 1500 North at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, with Bishop Robert Wardle conducting.
