Well, here we go again. I was very disappointed to read in a recent Deseret News article that the Alpine School Board plans to sneak in yet another property tax increase on the people of northern Utah County. I realize that schools need more money, but there are limits to how high property taxes can be raised! But most of all, I object to they way these elections are held.
First, they schedule a "special election" that most people won't know about. Then they make sure that ballots have to be cast in schools with the hopes that the only ones that vote will be schoolteachers and parents picking their kids up from school. It is underhanded and wrong for a few people to raise taxes for everyone. How about if we change the law so that property taxes will only be raised on those people who vote for an increase? Or, how about requiring at least 51 percent of registered voters to approve any increase?
My message to the Alpine School Board is simply this: We know that you need more money, but you had better start working on a Plan B because "We the people" of the Alpine School District will not stand for these sneaky property tax increases any longer.
