Too much has been said about this year's presidential election, and I cannot bring myself to comment further on the proceedings of the past few weeks. What does deserve to be mentioned is the tone of so many letters on this page and the reaction of Utahns to this episode. The vehement anti-Gore rhetoric that was expressed before the election has been surpassed by the partisanship following the election, as letter after letter has proclaimed George W. Bush the clear winner of the election and Al Gore a conniving sore loser.
I would now like to point out a few things that many have chosen to ignore. Not only would Gov. Bush be acting similarly if he were behind by a few hundred votes in the deciding state, but his actions as the presumed (and, I imagine, eventual) winner have been much more selfish and juvenile than those of the vice president.
It is one thing to begin the transition to the Oval Office before the vote has been certified, but it is entirely another to viciously attack both one's opponent and the judiciary that impartially interprets the law (as per its duty, even if Gov. Bush does not understand that fact).
If Utahns believe Al Gore to be a sore loser, what should they think of George W. Bush, who has proven himself to be the sorest of winners?
