Once again, the corruption in county government has come to the fore with the payment of a golden parachute of $279,500 to outgoing commissioner Mary Callaghan. Does this not smack of the illegal behavior of one of Salt Lake's former mayors, who solicited money from wealthy friends to pay off legal bills?

Why did Mary Callaghan suddenly change her mind about receiving this money, thereby burdening county taxpayers with yet another tax increase? How could this payment even have been approved given the current tight county budget that Nancy Workman will have to grapple with?

While Mary Callaghan's greed would appear to be legal to the courts, it is no different than the dishonest, money-grabbing tactics of Salt Lake City's former mayor. Shame on her.
