No disaster at bank -- just crews filming ads

LEHI -- No, there wasn't a major disaster at Bank of American Fork Wednesday night.

Although passers-by may have noticed roped-off areas and news crews near the bank, there was no carnage inside. Bank of American Fork was filming three television commercials that simulated a disaster scene, complete with journalists ostensibly reporting on the event.

The commercials were set up by Soter Associates, a Provo advertising agency. Advertising executives wouldn't reveal the commercial story lines except to say they deal with the upcoming merger of Zions Bank and First Security Bank.

Propane leak forces evacuation in W.V.

WEST VALLEY CITY -- A propane leak from a pipe on a 22,000-gallon tanker forced the evacuation of several businesses in West Valley City early Thursday.

Firefighters were called to GI Trucking, 2200 S. 2770 West, about 5:45 a.m. to assist workers there with the leak, which was caused when a pipe attached to the propane tank became dislodged, West Valley Fire Capt. Oliver Moore said. The tank was on the back of a trailer, which was being backed into a spot for off-loading. But when the trailer driver collided with another trailer, the pipe was dislodged, starting the leak, Moore said.

A small number of businesses containing a handful of peoplewere evacuated, he said. No homes were affected.

Firefighters were able to seal the leak with a plug and the tank was hauled away for repairs. No one was injured, and evacuees were allowed back into businesses within an hour, Moore said.

Prison inmate accused of setting up fake fund

An inmate at the Utah State Prison has been charged with two counts of third-degree felony forgery after he allegedly set up a fraudulent Missing Children's Fund from his prison cell.

In June and July the man took out ads in the Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News that solicited donations for the Missing Children's Fund and instructed people to send donations to the Salt Lake bank, court documents state.

During the same period the man allegedly forged documents that instructed Inmate Accounting to transfer money totaling $1,300 from two inmates' accounts into the Missing Children's Fund, the charges state.

Lane closures possible along I-15 in Davis

The Utah Department of Transportation is advising Davis County I-15 motorists that lane closures during off-peak hours may still sometimes be necessary as crews continue their work to expand the freeway there by one lane.

Re-striping operations are continuing, as weather permits, on southbound I-15, between Centerville's Parrish Lane and U.S. 89. That work could reduce traffic to two lanes some weekdays, during all but the morning drive, between 5 and 10 a.m.

Crews are also continuing minor shoulder work on the northbound lanes.

UDOT is also reminding motorists the speed limit is 55 mph in the entire 10-mile length of the project in both directions.

South of Parrish Lane, work is continuing to expand the bridges, but all three lanes of traffic are unaffected. However, the construction of new noise barriers on northbound I-15, from 500 West to Pages Lane, will begin in mid-February and could periodically close the outside lane of northbound I-15 on weekdays. Closures will not occur during the afternoon drive period, 2-8 p.m., and weekends will be unaffected.
