The origin of the biathlon goes back to an individual being able to stalk and shoot game over snowy terrain. Later, these same techniques were adopted by the military for ski troops. Biathlon did not become an Olympic event until 1960.

Biathlon requires outstanding physical strength and calmness. A participant can arrive at the target range with a heart rate of 150 beats per minute and be required to hold a rifle steady enough to hit a target within seconds.
