DIZZY'S WORLD; "The Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars" (Shanachie). **1/2
To add to the growing multitude of Dizzy Gillespie tribute albums out there, chalk up another -- only this one's a keeper. Rather than doing straight reinterpretations of the music he was known for playing, this 11-member band focuses on Dizzy's love for music that came from Latin cultures. Included in the mix are some tunes that are actually better known by other performers ("Desafinado" is more related to Stan Getz than anybody else, for example). But for the most part, the group remains true to Gillespie's compositions, leaning heavily on John Faddis' trumpet and the Brazilian percussion stylings of Duduka Da Fonseca. No real new ground is broken here, though it is an entertaining recording. Faddis comes across strongly on trumpet and the only two tunes that contain any real singing -- "Guarachi Guaro," "Barbados Carnival" -- just add to the prevalent Latin feel of the rest of the album.
