Fingerhut has opened a store to the public in the former Storehouse grocery store on 400 South.

The store replaces one opened in December at a small strip mall, Fingerhut's Larry McGinley said.

The Orem store is the only public access store in the West operated by the predominantly mail order company, he said. It has another store in Tennessee and one for employees at St. Cloud, Minn. All stores are in areas where Fingerhut has a warehouse, he said. Fingerhut's 1 million-square-foot plant in Spanish Fork never has been used to fill Fingerhut orders. After it was built, the market changed. Fingerhut instead leased space to other companies, including Wal-Mart, Fingerhut corporate spokesman Ben Sauko said.

Victims of an electrical fire last week have been given quilts made by volunteers of the Mountain Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Eight families who were displaced Jan. 25 by an electrical fire at 660 E. 300 South, received temporary food and housing from the Red Cross.

Utilities were temporarily turned off to the residents' homes, but crews were unable to restore electrical and water services on Tuesday. When families returned to their homes, no heat was available. Red Cross volunteers responded by making and distributing quilts.

"The Red Cross is a vital part of our community and needs your support to continue responding to disasters, providing relief to disaster victims and reuniting families," said Bruce Woolley, chairman of the volunteer trustee board.
