LA CROSSE, Wis. -- With his mother looking on, Jeff Fredrick of La Crosse won his sixth Wisconsin turkey calling contest in seven years.

"He's such a good caller that when I hear a real turkey, I say, 'That sounds just like Jeff,' " Sheila Fredrick said of her 28-year-old son after the competition Saturday. He totaled 263 of a possible 300 points in the open division at the National Wild Turkey Federation Wisconsin State Convention at the La Crosse Center.

The 20 competitors were asked to imitate five hen turkey sounds hunters use to attract gobbler turkeys.

"The cluck and purr is my best call, which is what I did for the caller's choice," Jeff Fredrick said. "Now it's off to nationals, but the turkey seasons come first."
