Lieutenant Colonel (P) Bert F, Vieta, USAR, an officer and gentleman, died Sunday, March 12, 2000.
Bert is the beloved son of Josephine B. Vieta and Fred B. Vieta (deceased). Cherished husband of Robyn Hinkle Vieta, beloved father of Jon Christian, Melissa Jamison and Lindsay Meredith. Left to remember the months spent ever beside him is Mallory, his constant companion, a small Yorkshire Terrier.He attended Judge Memorial High School, University of Washington and received a BS degree from the University of Utah in 1966. He was secretary and president of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Delta Sigma Chapter. Bert was a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, was a board member of the Salt Lake Heritage foundation and served two terms as president of the American Society of Interior Design, Mountain States Chapter. Bert's dedications to God, country, community was exemplary.
A true renaissance man, Bert's commitment to functional architectural spaces, good taste and fine design is cherished and respected by his many clients and colleagues.
He was instrumental in various community fundraising endeavors. These include the first restoration of the Executive Residence. He was project design coordinator, a member of the executive house committee and Friends of the Kearns Mansion. He also helped coordinate the first design house to benefit Ballet West, Chase House at Liberty Park and the Brigham Street Inn.
Bert was a member of the United States Army Reserve, and proudly served from 1966 until his death.
As a commissioned officer he was Company Commander, 244th PSC, Logistics Officer 162nd Support Group. He served in many capacities at HHD 96th ARCOM, including Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff Logistics, Commander 395th Finance Battalion, and was presently assigned to the 650th ASG as Director of Personnel. He valued his association with each and every soldier and his family thanks them for their support, love and prayers and many considerations over the past 10 months.
Bert truly enjoyed the scores of young people who traveled in and out our door. He loved his family, his friends, a good book, running, blueberries, playing with his pups, ice cream, his cat, Pirates of the Caribbean, U of U football and hot dogs.
He is also survived by his dearest extended family, Tom and Lois Hinkle, Leslye and Bill Stratton, his aunts, uncles and cousins, his Yorkies and his cat.
The family would like to thank the expert medical care given by Dr. David Howe, Dr. Joseph Schoenhals, Dr. Wanda Updike, Dr. Stewart, especially to Dr. Anna Beck, Dr. Lynn Webster and Martha Black, Coram Home Health Care, his nurses, Judy Peterson and Camille Mingo.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, March 17th, 10 a.m. at The Cathedral of the Madeleine, 309 E. South Temple. A Vigil Service will be held Thursday, March 16th, 7:30 p.m. also at the church, where friends may visit Thursday, 6:45-7:30 p.m. Committal Service following the Mass, Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 4th Ave. and T Street. Funeral Di-rectors, Neil O'Donnell and Sons.
