(5) Texas 77, (12) Indiana State 61
STARS -- Darren Kelley led a balanced Texas scoring attack with 16 points, while Chris Mihm, who suffered through foul trouble, Gabe Muoneke and Chris Owens added 16 each as the Longhorns held off the Sycamores.(8) Wisconsin 66, (9) Fresno State 56
STARS -- Jon Bryant scored 21 points, including four consecutive 3-pointers, to lead the Badgers to the first-round victory and spoil Fresno State coach Jerry Tarkanian's return to the Big Dance after a nine-year absence.
(1) Arizona 74, (16) Jackson State 47
STARS -- Playing without center Loren Woods, Arizona's Michael Wright scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Wildcats dumped the Tigers. The Wildcats led Jackson State by only eight points at halftime.
(4) LSU 64, (13) SE Missouri 61
STARS -- It took a Brian Beshara 3-pointer with 17.8 seconds left in the game for the Tigers to return to their NCAA-winning ways with the victory over SE Missouri. The Tigers hadn't won a game since 1992 when they beat BYU.
Despite showing up with 7:48 left in the first half, the Jackson State band gave their Tigers an immediate boost. When the musicians arrived to a standing ovation from the Huntsman Center crowd, Jackson State trailed 15-11, but the Tigers went on a 4-0 run to tie the score. The reason for the delay -- bus problems between the Salt Lake International Airport and the Huntsman Center.
It wasn't what one would expect from a No. 4 seed, but the LSU Tigers played well enough -- barely -- to defeat SE Missouri, 64-61. The Tigers turned the ball over 13 times and shot just 53 percent from the foul line (8-for-15). They'll have to do better Saturday against Texas.
