Mary Margaret Coles Stevens, 78, of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away March 25, 2000.
She was born June 16, 1921 in Pittsburg, Kansas, to Percy and Marguerite Coles. Mary graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1938. She attended Kansas State College at Pittsburg majoring in English and Social Science. She was a member of Phi Mu Gamma, Kappa Delta Phi Scholastic Society and Theta Alpha Phi Drama Society. She graduated in June, 1941 with a BS degree. Mary taught high school classes in Basehor, Kansas, and Pierce City, Missouri.During World War II, she worked as an aircraft inspector in Kansas City and manufactured children's furniture in Pittsburg.
She married Leon Keith Stevens on May 10, 1945. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She worked for the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City and began teaching for the Salt Lake School District in 1960. She started teaching full-time at East High in 1962. She sponsored the school newspaper and daily television news shows. She retired in 1983. Mary was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Women's Legislative Council, participated in Friends of the Salt Lake City Library and was on the Salt Lake Council of Women.
She was preceded in death by her husband Leon Keith Stevens. Survived by daughter, Margaret Utermoehlen; and son, Russell Eric (Linda); and grandchildren. Angela Beachner (Michael), Julie Ann Utermoehlen, Melissa Kate Utermoehlen, Jason Eric (Bonnie) Stevens, and Mark Stevens. She is also survived by her Aunt Gladys Washington Coil and Uncle Thomas P. Washington of Pittsburg, Kansas.
Services will be held Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at 12 noon at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple. Friends and family may call Tuesday at the mortuary from 6-8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:45-11:45 a.m. Burial, Salt Lake City Cemetery.
