Obituary: Diane Rigney Thomas

Diane Rigney Thomas, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died March 23, 2000, in Palm Springs, CA, with her family at her side.

Born Nov. 3, 1933 to Emmett Deacon and Melba Louise Schefski Rigney. Married Stiles McLaughlin (Ty) Thomas June 10, 1953.Diane was involved with Willem Christensen's dance troupe in the late 40's and early 50's and danced in the Summer Festivals for the University of Utah. Her stage experience included "Promised Valley," "The Great Waltz," "The Merry Widow," "Faust," and "The Tales of Hoffmann." She toured Montana State Fairs tap dancing in a chorus line. In addition, she was Long John Silvers Pirate Girl and was painted on his building at 9th West and 8th South.

She was a cheerleader at South High School and graduated in 1952.

She raised two daughters and multitudes of animals, including horses, snakes, cats, dogs, and even an abandoned squirrel. She was known to take spiders outside. She was a Girl Scout leader and an Exchange Club Women's Auxiliary Member.

The family spent summer weekends fishing at Flaming Gorge on their boat, the Ty-Di, and she often outfished her husband, much to his chagrin.

She enjoyed a good glass of wine, and a Cinegrill Salad. In her later years she worked at the Cinegrill, La Parisien, and the University Park Hotel. She loved working at the hotel and often waited on the football and basketball staff and coaches. Diane was forced to retire in Dec. of 1997 due to a sudden illness and always missed her friends and co-workers at the hotel.

We feel very blessed Diane was able to spend the last two years with us in relative comfort. Her courage helped her overcome many obstacles and we love and admire her for it.

Survivors include husband, Ty; daughter, Vicky Sue (Gary) Belanger; daughter, Kathryn (Jerry) Bartling; granddaughter, Rebekah Eugene Thomas; several cousins and many friends.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 30, at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, where friends may call Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday one hour prior to services. Interment, Murray City Cemetery. Funeral Directors, Larkin Mortuary.
