UtahVOLLEYBALL: Kim Turner, Utah volleyball's newest recruit, was featured in the May edition of Volleyball Magazine. Turner was selected as one of the "Fab 50" top recruits in the country. Utah coach Beth Launiere received a National Letter of Intent from Turner on Feb. Turner is a 6-foot-2 middle blocker from Chandler, Ariz., where she was a 1999 First-Team All-Region and All-State selection.
BASEBALL: The Utes are 13-18 with a 4-6 Mountain West Conference mark following a 3-0 loss to New Mexico Friday. The Lobos bested the Utes scoring three runs on nine hits with two errors. Utah was unable to score runs on four hits with two errors. The Utes and the Lobos continue the three-game series with a single game today at 1 p.m. at Franklin Covey Field.
SOFTBALL: Utah defeated San Diego State, 3-1 and 12-5, on the road Friday. The Utes improves to 21-15-0 overall, 2-0 in MWC play, while San Diego State drops to 17-21 overall, 0-2 in the MWC.
Weber State
FOOTBALL: Weber State opens its 2000 spring football drills Monday. In accordance with NCAA mandate, the Wildcats will have 15 practice dates. The first two practices will be "no pads." The drills conclude Saturday, April 29, with the annual Purple/White intrasquad game at noon.
Brigham Young
MEN'S TENNIS: After clinching the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 3 spots, BYU had a great opportunity to get a victory over the Rebels. Instead it was UNLV's Nenad Zivkovic who withstood a tough fought match from BYU's Gert Vilms at the No. 2 singles position that gave the Rebels the 4-3 win after the two battled for nearly five hours on the court in the 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 match, Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
MEN'S GYMNASTICS: Despite qualifying for three individual events, BYU senior Guard Young finished just short of winning the NCAA all-around title at the men's gymnastics national championships Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
Young, who finished the night with an all-around score of 58.175, finished just behind Ohio State's Jamie Natalie, who won the meet with a score of 58.375. Young was ahead of Natalie 48.925-48.500 going into the final rotation, but Young scored a 9.250 on the still rings while Natalie scored a 9.875 on the floor exercise to take the individual all-around title.
Young's father, Wayne Young, won the NCAA title in 1975 while competing for BYU. He later went on to be a member of the 1976 Olympic team.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: The Cougars captured its third MWC tennis match of the season with an easy 8-1 victory over instate rival Utah, Friday.
The win improves the Cougars record to 8-5, 3-0 on the season, while Utah falls to 6-8, 3-3.
Jodi Richardson led the way for BYU in singles action with her second position win over Irini Kotoglou 6-2, 6-4. Kim Kelly defeated Frida Kareld 6-4, 6-2. Tara Ferguson, Liza Khoudoiarova, and Dominique Reynolds also won their singles matches for the Cougars.
Southern Utah
BASEBALL: Junior Curtis Jacobsen went 7-for-9 with three homers and 13 RBIs in the T-Birds' 16-0 and 9-4 Mid Continent Conference victories over Valparaiso Friday in Indiana.
He hit two three-run homers and a grand slam in the first game. SUU is now 11-11 and 2-0 in conference play.
SOFTBALL: The T-Birds split a two-games series Friday with Mid Continent Conference foe UMKC in Cedar City.
The T-Birds won the opener 6-4, and the 'Roos bounced back for the 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
