One LDS missionary has died and another is recovering in Utah from injuries sustained in an auto collision in Argentina, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Monday.
Elder Eric Robert Driggs of Mesa, Ariz., died Thursday. He and Elder Jordan Lee Call of Logan were injured when the taxi they were riding in collided with a truck.
They were serving in the town of Villa Angela in the Argentina Resistencia Mission, church officials said. Local authorities are investigating the crash, which occurred a week ago.
Driggs and Call had been serving as missionaries for 10 months and four months, respectively.
Call was admitted Thursday to Cottonwood Hospital with multiple fractures, but a shoulder injury was the most serious, said spokesman Jess Gomez.
Call has undergone surgery and was in satisfactory condition Monday, Gomez said. He was expected to remain in the hospital for another three or four days, then undergo rehabilitation, which can last several months.
"He seems to be in good spirits and that's important when you're talking about the recovery and rehabilitation following this type of procedure," Gomez said.
Call has been surrounded by family and several friends since his return to Utah, said Bishop Brett Larsen of the North Logan 6th Ward.
