The Deseret News Newspaper in Education department has won a first-place General Excellence Award in its circulation category.

The award was presented during the Newspaper Association of America Foundation's annual Newspapers in Education conference, held last week in New York City. The paper won first place among daily papers of circulation 50,000 to 99,999. Second place in that circulation category went to the Ogden Standard-Examiner.

Carolyn Dickson, Deseret News NIE director, said the Deseret News has been a top national award winner for the past seven years and is the only newspaper in the world to be in the foundation's NIE Hall of Fame twice.

The Newspaper in Education program brings newspapers to schools across the state and produces materials and programs to help teachers use the newspaper in their classrooms.

"These folks are using newspapers to inspire young people not only to get involved in the paper -- and develop the important habit of reading -- but also to expand their horizons," said Toni F. Laws, the association's senior vice president for diversity. "Newspapers are a natural teaching tool, and the work of these NIE professionals brings it to an even higher level."
