SKIING: Kevin Sweeney, the assistant skiing coach in charge of cross country at the U. for nine years, has been promoted to head coach for men's and women's skiing.SOFTBALL: Utah (25-19) and Utah State (15-26) split a softball doubleheader in Logan Wednesday with the Utes claiming the first contest 3-1 and the Aggies winning the nightcap 8-7 in eight innings.

GOLF: The Utes placed seventh (880) at the Grand Canyon/Thunderbird Invitational after they edged their way out of a tie for eighth place after the first two rounds. Junior Brock Padilla had his highest finish and shot his lowest score of the year, finishing six strokes back for 12th overall (73-75-70 --218).

BASEBALL: The Utes are now 16-22 after splitting a nonconference doubleheader with Southern Utah. The Utes lost the first game 2-1 scoring one run on three hits, while giving up two runs on four hits to SUU. Utah dominated the second game, trouncing the Thunderbirds 15-10.

Brigham Young

TRACK AND FIELD: John Hedengren, the Cougars' top distance runner on both the cross country and track teams, was named GTE Academic All-American, while Kirsten Bolm was named Mountain West athlete of the week for her performance at the Texas Relays.

MEN'S TENNIS: Using strong play from throughout the lineup, BYU broke a seven-match losing streak by defeating Weber State 6-1 Tuesday in Ogden.

Utah State

TRACK AND FIELD: The Utah State track team will offer a memorial to fallen track athlete Brooks Gibbons at the Mark Faldmo Invitational Saturday at Maughan Track Stadium. Gibbons passed away March 27 after a two-year battle with esophageal cancer. He was granted a sixth year of eligibility this season but was never able to run.

The memorial for Gibbons will occur right before the start of the men's 110-meter hurdles. It will consist of a short tribute followed by 14.26 seconds of silence, which was Gibbons personal record, a first-place finish in 1997 at the Utah Collegiate Championships. The 110-meter race will then be run with lane four empty. The Aggies team lost their last match of the season on Tuesday at home to Idaho State 6-1. The loss droped the Aggies to 5-12 on the season.

The Aggies scored its only point of the day at number five singles where Ryan Burbidge defeated George Devidze of ISU 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Weber State

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Weber State defeated Utah State 7-2 on Wednesday. This is the second win over the Aggies this season.

MEN'S TENNIS: The Wildcats will be competing this Friday through Sunday at the Big Sky Pacific Regional Tournament. The Regional will be hosted by Northern Arizona University and held at the Paseo Tennis Center in Glendale, Arizona.
