LONDON (AP) -- Paul McCartney's new girlfriend will receive $320,000 in compensation for a 1993 accident in which she lost a leg after being run down by a police motorcyclist.
Scotland Yard announced the out-of-court settlement Thursday with former swimsuit model Heather Mills but did not admit responsibility for the accident.Mills' left leg was amputated below the knee. She was hit as she crossed a street in London's Kensington neighborhood.
The motorcyclist, Simon Osbourne, was later cleared of careless driving and launched a suit against Mills for stress and injuries.
Mills, 32, told The Mirror newspaper she went to court only in response to Osbourne's damages suit.
She has devoted her time to charity work for amputees and land-mine victims. She also wrote an autobiography, "Out on a Limb."
McCartney confirmed last month that he was dating Mills, asking reporters to respect their privacy. The former Beatle's longtime wife, Linda McCartney, died of breast cancer in 1998.
