NFL DRAFT: The Jets moved up four spots in the first round of the NFL draft in a swap with the 49ers.
The Jets, who acquired two first-round choices from Tampa Bay for star receiver Keyshawn Johnson, now own the 12th, 13th, 18th and 27th spots. San Francisco, with the 24th overall slot, got the 16th choice from New York and a second-rounder, 48th overall.
USU SCRIMMAGE: Utah State will conclude its spring football practice with the annual Pepsi-Cola Blue-White Game on Friday, April 14 at 7 p.m. The game will take place at Romney Stadium, and there will not be an admission charge. The format of the game will feature two possessions per team per quarter and will see the starters at this point against the rest of the team. Some players will play on both teams.
Colleges
BETTING: A Senate committee voted to ban betting on college sports -- legal only in Nevada -- but declined a challenge from Nevada senator Richard Bryan to set a nationwide minimum gambling age of 21. The legislation would outlaw betting on Olympic, college or high school athletic events. Though there is little legal betting on Olympics and none on high school sports, Nevada's gambling industry accepts bets on college sporting events not involving a school in the state.
NEE FINDS WORK: Danny Nee, fired last month at Nebraska despite winning more games than any basketball coach in school history, was hired at Robert Morris. Nee coached seven NCAA tournament and seven NIT teams in 20 years at Ohio University and Nebraska.
COACH RETURNS: Leon Barmore, who retired one month ago, returned to Louisiana Tech as women's basketball coach after school officials failed to attract his desired replacement. Barmore will honor the five-year contract he signed last August.
Golf
BYU-STANFORD SHOOTOUT: The fifth-ranked BYU men's golf team will host 1994 national champion Stanford Saturday at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi. The BYU-Stanford Shootout will be BYU's first head-to-head tournament of the season and will be played in a stroke-play format. Teams will tee off at 7:30 a.m. and play two rounds of 36 holes.
Baseball
WHAT'S UP DOC?: Desperate for starting pitching, Tampa Bay acquired right-hander Dwight Gooden from the Astros for cash. The 35-year-old right-hander, who grew up in Tampa and lives in St. Petersburg, made one start for Houston this season, allowing four runs and six hits in four innings against Philadelphia. A four-time All-Star, Gooden has 188 wins and 2,239 strikeouts over 15 seasons with the Mets, Yankees, Indians and Astros.
Softball

Admission to the event is free, but for $3, spectators may take advantage of the "Dugout Cookout" promotion. In between games, food and games will be provided by 10 area businesses.
