CHICAGO — Pinch-hitter Jose Nieves slapped a game-winning single to right with two out in the ninth, and the Chicago Cubs capped a three-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves with a 3-2 win Thursday.
Shane Andrews, whose three-run homer Monday sparked a four-run ninth-inning rally, was hit by a pitch from Mike Remlinger (0-1) to start the bottom of the ninth and moved to second on Jeff Reed's sacrifice.
Damon Buford struck out before Nieves singled to send the Cubs out of their dugout in celebration.
DIAMONDBACKS 5, PADRES 4: At San Diego, Steve Finley hit a pair of two-run homers to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks over the San Diego Padres, who wore camouflage jerseys and green hats to honor the city's large Navy and Marine Corps population.
METS 2, PHILLIES 1: At Philadelphia, Mike Piazza's tiebreaking RBI double with two out in the ninth helped New York snap a four-game losing streak.
Jay Payton singled with one out off Philadelphia's Scott Aldred (0-1) for his first career three-hit game. With two out, Piazza hit a liner to left-center off Amaury Telemaco. Payton barely beat Mickey Morandini's relay throw from left fielder Ron Gant to score the winning run.
PIRATES 4, EXPOS 3: At Pittsburgh, Bruce Aven and Jason Kendall hit two-out RBI singles in the bottom of the ninth as Pittsburgh rallied against Montreal closer Ugueth Urbina.
BREWERS 4, MARLINS 0: At Milwaukee, Jason Bere allowed three hits and struck out nine in seven innings to lead Milwaukee over Florida.
Bere (2-0) allowed two singles in the second, escaping a bases-loaded jam by striking out pitcher Brad Penny to end the inning. Bere also allowed a third-inning single to Brant Brown.
In his first start, Bere allowed one run on five hits with eight strikeouts in six innings, a 9-1 Brewers victory over St. Louis.
ROCKIES 12, CARDINALS 6: At Denver, Todd Helton and Mike Lansing each drove in three runs in a 10-run second inning to lead the Rockies to the victory over the Cardinals.
DODGERS 11, GIANTS 7: At San Francisco, Shawn Green had three hits, including his first home run for Los Angeles, as the Dodgers beat San Francisco to complete a sweep of the Giants' inaugural home series at Pacific Bell Park.
The three-game sweep was Los Angeles' first in San Francisco since April 1981.
