CLEVELAND -- Rick Helling allowed four hits in eight innings Friday, and David Segui, Rafael Palmeiro and Ivan Rodriguez all homered as the Texas Rangers soured opening day at Jacobs Field with a 7-2 win over the Cleveland Indians.
Helling (2-0) gave up two runs and two hits in the first inning, but settled down and retired 14 of 15 before giving up a leadoff single to Sandy Alomar in the eighth.YANKEES 7, ROYALS 5: At New York, Roger Clemens, struggling with his control, became the first Yankees starter other than Orlando Hernandez to win, and New York stopped streaking Kansas City.
ATHLETICS 13, RED SOX 6: At Boston, Eric Chavez hit a grand slam as Oakland scored six runs in the first inning.
Kevin Appier (2-1) allowed three earned runs and eight hits in six innings, striking out six to win his second consecutive start.
WHITE SOX 9, ANGELS 4: At Chicago, Frank Thomas homered and extended his season-opening hitting streak to 11 games as Chicago matched its best start in eight years.
TIGERS 10, DEVIL RAYS 5: At Detroit, Juan Gonzalez hit the first home run in Comerica Park history and Tony Clark also homered for Detroit.
MARINERS 11, BLUE JAYS 9: At Toronto, Edgar Martinez hit a three-run homer as Seattle scored six runs in the first inning to knock out David Wells.
TWINS 10, ORIOLES 9: At Minneapolis, Cal Ripken moved within three hits of 3,000, but Minnesota rallied for six runs in the eighth inning to win.

DODGERS 8, REDS 1: At Los Angeles, Orel Hershiser, star of the 1988 World Series, made a triumphant return to Dodger Stadium on Friday.
Gary Sheffield had three hits and drove in the first two Los Angeles runs. His two-out homer off rookie Rob Bell (0-1) in the first gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.
METS 8, PIRATES 5 (12): At Pittsburgh, Mike Piazza homered twice in his first career five-hit game and Melvin Mora had a go-ahead, two-run single in the 12th inning.
EXPOS 4, PHILLIES 0: At Philadelphia, Dustin Hermanson pitched his second career shutout and Vladimir Guerrero hit his fifth home run of the season.
Chris Brock (0-2) struck out a career-high 11 in seven innings, but was hurt by solo home runs from Guerrero, Mike Mordecai and Rondell White.
BRAVES 6, BREWERS 3: At Milwaukee, Tom Glavine pitched into the ninth inning and Javy Lopez hit a two-run homer as the Atlanta Braves beat the Milwaukee Brewers to end a three-game losing streak.
Kerry Ligtenberg gave up Ron Belliard's sacrifice fly. Mike Remlinger got the last out for his second save.
MARLINS 9, CUBS 4: At Chicago, Danny Bautista hit a three-run homer and Alex Gonzalez added a two-run shot to lift the Florida Marlins over the Chicago Cubs.
Sammy Sosa hit a solo homer for the Cubs, who were coming off a three-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves.
ASTROS 10, PADRES 4: At San Dieg, Jeff Bagwell hit a grand slam and Shane Reynolds hit a solo home run and pitched five effective innings to lead the Houston Astros to the win.
Bagwell homered off Kevin Walker to cap a six-run, sixth inning as the Astros broke a 3-3 tie. Walker was making his major league debut.
ROCKIES 6, CARDINALS 2: At Denver, Pedro Astacio pitched 7 1-3 solid innings and the Rockies backed him with three home runs to beat the Cardinals for their third straight victory.
Astacio (1-2) allowed just four hits and two runs. He struck out eight against a lineup missing Mark McGwire.
McGwire was examined for lingering back pain by team physician Dr. George Paletta, and no new disc injury was discovered.
D'BACKS 3, GIANTS 1: Damian Miller's two-run double in the top of the ninth inning lifted Arizona past San Francisco.
Randy Johnson pitched a complete-game five hitter for the Diamondbacks, recording 11 strikeouts in the process.
