The grounds of the Day-Riverside Library, 1575 W. 1000 North, will be dedicated as a Nature Study Area at 11 a.m. Monday, May 1.
Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson; Salt Lake City Council Chairman Carlton Christensen, District 1; and John Becker, chairman of the Salt Lake City Library Board, will be among participantst.
Children from Backman and Newman Elementary schools will plant native plants. Nature tours will be available.
The library grounds, located on the banks of the Jordan River, offer the community an opportunity to experience natural landscaping, said city library system director Nancy Tessman.
The library's Nature Study Area has been designated a protected space by the city officials. The area has a model ecosystem with a variety of plants and native grasses that support a population of birds, bees, butterflies and other wildlife.
As caretaker of the area, the library's role is to encourage the natural flowers and grasses to flourish on their own, while removing weeds that invade the area.
