BASEBALL: Trent Kitsch's three-run double in the eighth inning Saturday led UNLV to a 13-11 victory and three-game sweep over BYU.

The Cougars are mired in a season-low five-game losing streak with a 22-20 overall record and 10-8 in the Mountain West Conference.

UNLV improved to 13-25 and 6-10 with a six-game winning streak.

On Friday, a pair of home runs by freshman Kainoa Obrey brought BYU back into the game that had gotten away, but UNLV hung on to an 11-9 victory.

After the starting time was delayed 40 minutes due to rain, UNLV opened an 8-0 lead in the second inning to claim its second straight victory over BYU.

Six of those runs were unearned after two outs had been recorded in the inning when the Rebels chased starter Micah Mangrum off the mound.

UNLV's pitching baffled the Cougars, striking out 16 BYU batters in the game.

Utah State

TENNIS: USU's women's tennis team recorded its eighth victory of the season Friday, defeating Southern Utah 5-4 at the Sports Academy.

The win concludes the Aggies' regular season as they finish with an overall record of 8-10.

The singles action was split, with each team winning three matches.

Utah State's Sarah Lowe, Amy Thatcher and Tracy Bertanga each defeated their respective opponents at the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles.

In doubles action, the Lowe and Amy Thatcher handled SUU's Shaland Romeir and Kendra Gleason, winning 8-5.

Utah State then secured the victory over Southern Utah when Tracy Bertagna and Johanna Johnson also defeated their opponents 8-5.

SOFTBALL: Utah State's Kristin Hommel pitched a one-hit shutout to lead the Aggies to a 2-0 victory against Cal Poly in the first game of a Big West softball doubleheader.

In the nightcap, Cal Poly recorded a 3-2 victory Saturday.

Hommel improved to 8-11 on the year as she allowed a second-inning double before shutting down the Mustangs the rest of the game.

Hommel has recorded three shutouts in her last four outings.

USU enters today's noon game with Cal Poly at 16-27 overall and 4-7 in the Big West, while Cal Poly is 13-27 and 1-13 in league play.

Weber State

GOLF: Dustin Volk, a sophomore from Layton, was named today as the Big Sky Conference's Golf Player of the Week.

Volk finished in third place at the Grand Canyon University Thunderbird Invitational in Phoenix last Tuesday carding a two-under 214.

He led the individual race after the first two rounds of play. Volk's 2-under 70 in the first round helped lead Weber State to a 287, its lowest round this year.

Southern Utah

FOOTBALL: Matt Cannon re-established the fact that he is something special at Southern Utah University's Red/White Scrimmage Saturday, but the fates weren't nearly as accommodating for his backups as SUU concluded spring drills in front of 1,200 fans at Eccles Coliseum.

Cannon completed 10-of-12 passes for 157 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and carried four times for 58 yards.

SUU's other QBs were a combined 1-for-7 passing with an interception as SUU's first defense continually harassed the quarterbacks with the expected result of sacks or hurried, incomplete passes.

Clay Denton carried three times for 64 yards and caught three passes for 36 yards, scored once on a 55-yard run and once on a 24-yard pass from Cannon.

The T-Birds open the season Sept. 2 when they host Fort Lewis.

SOFTBALL: SUU swept the second doubleheader of a four-game set against Mid-Con opponent Youngstown State, 11-2 and 11-10.
