OGDEN — With light rain and a stiff wind early Saturday morning, many worried that the weather was not going to cooperate at the Weber State Track and Field High School Invitational.

By mid-afternoon though, the weather quieted down, and the sun came out, making for perfect track and field conditions.

The coaches of defending state champion Mountain View seemed to be more worried about the overall competition than the weather.

The Bruins came into the meet a few athletes short because of the senior prom. The dance didn't slow them down too much as Mountain View left with the first place overall team award.

Winning the Track-Athlete-of-the-Meet award was Jake Garlick of West Jordan.

In an outstanding performance, Garlick set a new meet record with his win in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.80 seconds, beating the old meet record of 14.04.

He also took first-place medals in the 400-meter run with a time of 48.21, and the 200-meter with a time of 21.64.

Nic Arrenhuis of Mountain View earned honors of Field Athlete of the Meet, taking first place, as well as setting new meet records in two different events.

In the discus, Arrenhuis set the new record with a throw of 201 feet 1 inch.

His shot put throw of 62 feet 13/4 inches was nearly seven feet further than the next closest throw and just enough for a new record.

"I didn't get enough time to warm up, and my first three throws weren't very good," Arrenhuis said. "But I'm happy with it. It was one of my better throws."

Both records set by Arrenhuis replaced records held by his older brother, Dan.

Davis' Ben Gardner is also worth mentioning. He placed first in the 300-meter hurdles at 38.05 and placed second in the 110-meter hurdles.

In track events, Wasatch's Josh Probst threw a javelin 183 feet 11 inches to win first place.

GIRLS MEET

A rain storm wreaked havoc on the girls' Weber State Invitational Friday, as some teams left early and didn't compete. Mountain View won the title with 77 points, Kearns took second with 44, and Cedar City was third with 36. The meet didn't have finals due to the inclement weather. Places were awarded based on marks in the preliminaries.

Clearfield's Candice Workman was honored as the Athlete of the Meet. She threw a state-record toss of 159 feet 1/4 inch in the discus, won the shot put with a meet-record throw of 46 feet 81/2 inches and took second in the javelin.

Weber's Kim Van Beekum won the 100-meter race in 12.85, Mountain View's Heather Houle had the fastest 200 meter time (25.30), Judge's Kathleen Smith took first place in the 400 meter (59.20), and Provo's Kassi Andersen took the 800 meter gold in 2:13.54.
