A Provo woman is facing federal charges for allegedly helping clients in her tax preparation business file false returns.

Ellen Price, 52, was indicted this month on 10 counts of falsifying federal tax returns or assisting in the filing of false tax returns.

Price, who did tax preparation work for the Internal Revenue Service for about a decade until the mid-1980s, is also accused of filing a false return for herself in 1993. At that time, she was running her own tax preparation business in the Salt Lake area, Harmon & Price. Many of her clients were self-employed and, according to the indictment, in some cases she understated gross receipts and overstated business expenses in calculating their returns.

The indictment also said Price underreported her own income from the business in 1993.
