JAMES PLATT, Cedar City: There may not be a more talented all-around student-athlete in the state than this Redman, who's bursting at the seams in skill and smarts.
Platt, a 6-foot-3 senior, is one of the top pitchers in the state after being selected first-team all-state and Region 9 MVP as a junior. The righty is off to an amazing start for Cedar. He has a 5-0 record while only allowing 10 hits and two earned runs in almost 30 innings.Platt was also an all-state receiver and a starter on the varsity basketball team earlier this school year. He excels in the classroom as well, carrying a 3.9 GPA with honors classes. He is also active in church and community service and earned his Eagle Scout when he was 13 years old.
"He is an exceptional talent but even a better leader. He instills confidence in his fellow teammates," said Cedar baseball coach Mark Johnson. "He demonstrates high integrity and character at home, in school and on the baseball field."
CARRIE CORNWELL, Rowland Hall: Carrie Cornwell is a standout senior at Rowland Hall St. Mark's who has managed to maintain a 3.8 GPA while thriving at playing sports year round.
She played and was a team captain for volleyball, basketball and is now tearing up the softball field.
In one recent week, Cornwell had 10 strikeouts, 14 put-outs, three hits and four RBIs to push the Winged Lions to a victory over North Summit.
As of last week, she was batting .400 and had 65 total strikeouts and eight RBIs.
All three of her coaches say she is a great leader and "full of intensity."
"After tackling her academic load at Rowland Hall-St. Mark's, you will find her hard at work practicing her sport skills," said RHSM softball coach Kathy Howa. "She is extremely dedicated and is a great asset to our team."
