I was absolutely appalled at the lack of sensitivity in music critic Edward Reichel's concert review that appeared in the Deseret News April 8.

He pointed the finger at two young musicians, accusing them of immaturity, lack of musicality and talent. The next target was guest conductor Alan Gilbert, who Reichel said led the orchestra in "one of the worst performances imaginable."Going on, he said, "He was joined by pianist Fazil Say, who brutalized Mozart beyond recognition." Then, after a seemingly endless barrage of "swipes" at the musicians came the final insult: "Without question one of the worst concerts by the Utah Symphony in recent memory."

How dare he be so cutting? This isn't critiquing, it's crucifying. You can disagree with the interpretation without burying the performers who have worked so hard.

After that kind of review, I'd be surprised if there were any takers for tickets.

Sorry, Mr. Reichel, I'd never reserve a seat for you at a performance of mine.
