SOFTBALL: Following a weekend sweep at the hands of in-state rival Utah, the Cougars return to the field against San Diego State and UNLV in doubleheaders Friday and Saturday.BYU remained in fifth place in the Mountain West Conference standings, just ahead of UNLV. San Diego State is currently tied for second, with Utah behind leader New Mexico.

Action both days will begin at 1 p.m. at Harmon Field in Provo, located south of campus at 900 E. 250 South.

TRACK AND FIELD: The Cougars will take on the best talent in the region this weekend, as they host the Robison Invitational, April 20-22, at the BYU Track complex. Admission is free of charge for all three days of competition. Among those expected to compete are Utah, Utah State, Weber State, Southern Utah, Idaho State, Ricks and UVSC. A number of former collegians will also participate as "unattached" athletes, including two-time NCAA 100-meter champion Leonard Myles-Mills and former world record-holder Tiffany Lott-Hogan. The meet began in 1989, following the retirement of former men's head coach Clarence Robison. The Cougars have won every men's and women's team title since the event's inception. The meet will begin Thursday with the first half of the heptathlon and decathlon competition and will conclude Saturday afternoon with the 4x400 relays at 2:20 p.m.

Utah

ATHLETICS BANQUET: The University of Utah will cap a year of celebrating 25 years of varsity women's athletics at the U. with a banquet on May 6. The banquet, which is open to the public, will be held at the Salt Lake Hilton with a reception at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. The cost is $32 per person. The top 25 female athletes of all-time at the U., as voted on by the fans, will be honored at the dinner. Please call 581-8171 for reservations.

Utah State

VOLLEYBALL: Utah State's head women's volleyball coach Tom Peterson announced Tuesday the 2000 schedule for the Aggie volleyball team. USU will play 29 matches in the season and host 11 at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Among the opponents for the Aggies during the 2000 season will be two Final Four teams in Pacific and Long Beach State and seven NCAA Tournament teams, which include Kansas State, Brigham Young, Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara and Utah, along with the Tigers and 49ers.

TRACK: Utah State women's track team member Charlotte Wahlin was voted USU's athlete of the week by the local media panel.

Wahlin, a junior from Copenhagen, Denmark, broke the school record, the Danish national record and her personal record, while also provisionally qualifying for NCAA Championships with her first-place mark of 190 feet 10 inches in the hammer throw at the Mark Faldo Open this weekend. Wahlin's mark beat the previous school record of 190-feet 3-inches, set in 1998 by Jessica Drake.

BASKETBALL: Reservations are being accepted for the Utah State basketball banquet to be held Thursday, April 27 at the CopperMill Restaurant. The cost of the event, which will begin at 6 p.m., is $20 per person. Anyone interested in attending should make a reservation with Heidi in the athletic department at 797-1850 by April 25.

GOLF: Utah Valley State College came away with a golf victory at the District I Golf Tournament Tuesday on the Reserve at East Bay, finishing on top of the field of eight teams (six from Arizona) after some stellar individual play from Tadd Cox and Brian Benedictson.

The Wolverines shot a 596 to beat out the nation's top-ranked team, Scottsdale Community College, by three strokes. The win marked the first time in UVSC's seven-year intercollegiate golf history that the Wolverines have been able to defeat the Arizona school in a district meet.

Cox, a Provo High grad, led the Wolverines Tuesday, tying for the best round of the day with an even par 72. He finished with a tournament total of 146 to wind up in fourth place overall. Benedictson also had an excellent round, with a one-over 73.

HALL OF FAME: Tom Perkins and Wilford Clyde will be inducted into the UVSC Athletic Hall of Fame at the UVSC Athletic Awards banquet on Wednesday at the David O. McKay Events Center. The Athletic Hall of Fame was established two years ago under the direction of UVSC Athletic Director Mike Jacobsen. Perkins and Clyde will be the seventh and eight inductees. Perkins is a former UVSC head women's basketball coach. Clyde has made significant contributions to UVSC athletics and has been a long-time member of the Board of Directors of the Wolverine Club. The Hall of Fame ceremonies are held in conjunction with the athletic department's annual awards banquet, where the year's top Wolverine athletes are recognized and honored.
