GOLDEN SPIKE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE, Box Elder County -- The 131st anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike to complete the nation's first transcontinental railroad will feature two re-enactments of the event this year on Wednesday, May 10.
The two events are planned for 12:20 and 3 p.m., and this special day will feature free admission to the historic site.The Golden Spike National Historic Site will open at 8 a.m., and the arrival of the two railroad engines, Jupiter and No. 119, will occur at 9:30 a.m.
Photographic re-creations of the "East-meets-West" ceremony will be at 10 and 10:30 a.m., and those attending in authentic period dress are invited to appear in these two photographs.
Musical entertainment will be provided by Box Elder High School and Discovery Elementary School starting at 10:45 a.m. There will be also be a flag-raising ceremony at 11:30 a.m.
A lion dance will be performed at 12:55 p.m. by the Utah Organizers of Chinese Americans, and the Coldwater Gage will appear at 4:30 p.m.
All visitors are encouraged to carpool and arrive early to the events. Because seating is limited, blankets and lawn chairs are advised.
The visitors center will close at 5 p.m.
The Golden Spike Site is about 30 miles northwest of Brigham City, off U-83.
