Byron Gene Warr, Sr., died at home on April 20, 2000 at the young age of 54 due to the rare and rapidly progressing disease, Primary Amyloidosis.
Gene was loved and revered as a husband, father, grand-father, brother, son, uncle and friend. He will be missed greatly.Born on October 30, 1945, Gene graduated from Granger High School and married his high school sweetheart, Bernice Dilley in 1963. After 28 years of service, Gene retired as a Battalion Chief in the Salt Lake City Fire Department in 1996. He renewed his passion for fire fighting by becoming the first full-time Chief of the Riverton City Fire Department in 1998, and put his career on the line to provide Riverton citizens with the highest level of emergency service. At the time of his death, he was a Battalion Chief for the Salt Lake County Fire Department. Throughout his career, Gene represented the communities he served with passion and integrity. Gene was an avid (possibly fanatical) outdoorsman and spent as much time as possible camping, hunting, and fishing with his family and friends. Before he died, Gene was distressed that he would not be able to foster in his grandchildren an interest in the outdoors, an activity he enjoyed so much. We promise him that his legacy of love and respect for nature and wildlife will continue in our family. In his last days, Gene spent his energy fighting his disease with the same gusto, determination and stubbornness he displayed in his life. He will be remembered as a man determined to realize his dreams and do what is right. Gene will now be reunited with his father and hunting buddy, "Pete" Warr; and his little sister, Cindy Mecham.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice; daughter, Heidi, and husband, Erric Hammond; son, Byron, and wife, Heidi; son, Troy; six grandchildren, Shante', Braden, Gavin, Gabriel, Jezandra, Cale; his mother, "Betty" Warr; sisters, Sheila Shaw, Linda Barber; and brothers, Milt, Mike, Doug, Pat, Kent, Kim.
