LOGAN -- High speed is being blamed for an accident that left two people dead and sent eight others to hospitals Saturday.
Killed were:Carmella Rojas, 51, Mexico.
Rosario Rojas, 85, Mexico.
The report said that just after 11 a.m. the brakes locked up on a truck driven by Andrew L. Harris, 22, Logan, who was traveling down Logan Canyon 22 miles northeast of Logan. The truck skidded into oncoming traffic where it collided head-on with a 1985 Ford Crown Victoria carrying eight people. The report didn't indicate how many of the eight people in the car were wearing seat belts.
Besides the two fatalities, four people suffered major injuries. Thirteen-year-old Ernesto Rojas, Mexico, remained in critical condition at LDS Hospital Tuesday. The Ford's driver, Manuel Martinez, 53, Magna; Jesus Escarpito Monarrez, 49, Mexico; and Brigita Martinez, 64, Magna were all in serious condition Tuesday, LDS Hospital spokesman Jess Gomez said.
The Ford's other two passengers, Manuel Rojas, 15 and Juan Rojas, 13, both from Mexico, were treated at Logan Regional Hospital and later released.
Harris and his passenger, Katie Amsden, New York, were also treated at Logan Regional Hospital and released.
UHP Lt. Claron Brenchley said alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the crash and Harris was "hurrying home because he was late for work."
