GLOBE, Ariz. (AP) -- Winds and low humidity were no help to firefighters battling the season's first major wildfire that had scorched more than 1,800 acres in the Tonto National Forest.
Firefighters struggling over steep terrain were pulled away from the front lines Thursday as winds gusting to 25 mph fanned the flames. Gusts of up to 40 mph were expected today."That really heightens our concern," forest spokesman Jim Payne said. "Those winds mean that fire has the capacity to spread even more."
It wasn't immediately known what sparked the blaze.

A ranch and other buildings as well as archaeological sites and the habitat of an endangered Mexican spotted owl were threatened, Payne said.
