PROVO -- Mayor Lewis K. Billings was to accept an award Friday designating Provo as a 2000 Tree City USA.
The award comes from the National Arbor Day Foundation, a nonprofit education organization dedicated to tree planting and environmental stewardship. Provo is also a recipient of a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating progress in its urban forestry program. The recognition was to be given Friday at the city's Arbor Day celebration at Westridge Elementary School, 1720 W. 1460 North.
At the beginning of 2000, Billings requested that 2,000 trees be added to Provo by Arbor Day, and Friday's ceremony will include the planting of the 2,000th tree.
"The Tree City USA award shows that there is a solid foundation of improvement and renewal for this valuable public resource in Provo," said Scott Bunker, Provo city forester.
