LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A fleet of 150 alternative-fuel big rigs will hit the road as part of a pollution lawsuit settlement between California and three of the state's largest grocery chains.
The agreement announced Thursday involves Vons Cos., Ralphs Grocery Co. and Albertson's/Lucky Stores Inc.At a news conference Thursday, state Attorney General Bill Lockyer said the pact could convince other companies to move away from diesel fuel, the source of 70 percent of Southern California's toxic air pollution.
Environmental groups and the attorney general's office sued the market chains in 1998, alleging they were exposing people to hazardous diesel exhaust without issuing warnings as required by law.
