WASHINGTON (Reuters) — The State Department Thursday warned U.S. citizens living or traveling in China to be especially careful on the anniversary of the mistaken May 8 bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade last year.
China last week said it still wanted the United States to account for NATO's bombing of the Belgrade embassy.
Three Chinese were killed in the attack by a U.S. stealth bomber during NATO's air campaign against Yugoslavia last year. The attack sparked violent anti-NATO protests across China and dragged Sino-American ties to their lowest point in a decade.
The State Department said it had no specific tips about any planned demonstrations or threats against U.S. interests in China but said sensitivities were expected to be high, and some events commemorating the tragic bombing were anticipated.
