PHILADELPHIA — Jaromir Jagr and Martin Straka each scored to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to their first victory in Philadelphia in nearly six years, 2-0 Thursday night in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.
The Penguins, who went 16 games without winning in Philadelphia, have never beaten the Flyers in a playoff series but take a 1-0 lead into Saturday's Game 2.
Jagr's goal at 14:33 of the first period was his fourth in six playoff games this season and his third from a bad angle from the right circle area.
Straka made it 2-0 at 4:46 of the second for the Penguins, who managed just 14 shots against Flyers rookie goalie Brian Boucher.
MAPLE LEAFS 2, DEVILS 1: At Toronto, New Jersey stifled Mats Sundin and Toronto's top line, but couldn't stop third-liners Darcy Tucker and Wendel Clark.
Tucker, set up by Clark, scored 1:18 into the third period as the Maple Leafs opened their second-round playoff series against the Devils with a victory.
Dmitri Yushkevich also scored, and Curtis Joseph stopped 32 shots as the Leafs won their third-straight playoff game.
Petr Sykora scored for the Devils, who lost for the first time this postseason after a four-game first-round sweep of the Florida Panthers.
Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Saturday in Toronto.
AVALANCHE 2, RED WINGS 0: At Denver, Peter Forsberg and Sandis Ozolinsh scored, and Patrick Roy posted his 13th career playoff shutout as Colorado beat Detroit in the opening game of their Western Conference semifinal series.
Roy, tied for third in NHL history in playoff shutouts, extended his playoff record for victories to 115. He had 25 saves, while Detroit's Chris Osgood had 24.
Forsberg scored the only goal of the first period on a deflection at 10:13. After Martin Lapointe went to the penalty box for roughing, Ozolinsh scored on a power play at 11:39 for Colorado's other goal.
Game 2 is Saturday at Denver.
