Cubs 6, Diamondbacks 5CHICAGO -- Sammy Sosa hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning Friday as the Chicago Cubs beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5, ending Kevin Tapani's 12-game losing streak.
Steve Finley's ninth homer leading off the seventh gave Arizona a 1-0 lead and Tapani (1-3) appeared on his way to tying the club record with his 13th straight loss.
But Damon Buford hit a solo shot in the bottom of the inning to tie the game and drive out Armando Reynoso.
Tapani allowed just three hits and a run in seven innings. It was his first victory since beating Colorado on June 24.
ASTROS 7, BREWERS 0: At Milwaukee, Chris Holt pitched a one-hitter, allowing only a second-inning single to Ron Belliard, for his first career complete game as Houston beat Milwaukee.
Holt (1-3) not allow a runner to reach second base in his first shutout. Belliard's hit was clean to center field. The right-hander struck out three and walked two.
CARDINALS 7, PHILLIES 4: At Philadelphia, Mark McGwire had a two-run double and three RBIs in St. Louis' victory over Philadelphia.
The Cardinals, whose 52 homers are a major league record for April, failed to homer for only the second time in 23 games. They need six homers Saturday and Sunday to tie Baltimore's 1987 record of 58 homers in any month.
Garrett Stephenson (3-0) was the winner, and Dave Veres finished for his fifth save. Carlos Reyes (0-2) took the loss.
PIRATES 2, REDS 1: At Pittsburgh, Kris Benson limited Cincinnati to five hits in eight innings as Pittsburgh beat the Reds.
Benson (1-3) didn't allow a hit until Benito Santiago singled with one out in the fifth. The right-hander struck out six. Mike Williams got the final two outs for his third save.
Pittsburgh's Brian Giles homered off Pete Harnisch (0-3) leading off the second inning, the right fielder's fifth home run of the season.
ROCKIES 12, METS 5: At Denve, All-Star catcher Mike Piazza left because of a wrist injury in the fifth inning and New York starter Mike Hampton was chased moments later as Colorado beat the Mets.
Piazza was taken to Rose Medical Center for X-rays. Test results were not immediately known. He appeared to be hurt when he was hit by an errant throw from second baseman Edgardo Alfonzo during a play at the plate.
BRAVES 7, PADRES 2: At San Diego, on a relatively quiet night for John Rocker, the Atlanta Braves made some noise extending their winning streak to 11 games.
Bobby Bonilla drove in the go-ahead run with a pinch-hit triple and Brian Jordan hit a three-run homer to snap an 0-for-22 slump and the Braves beat the San Diego Padres.
DODGERS 5, MARLINS 3: At Los Angeles, Shawn Green hit a two-run double and continued home on an error as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied in the seventh inning to beat the Florida Marlinsand snap a four-game losing streak.
The Dodgers trailed 3-2 when Green doubled down the right-field line to drive in Devon White and Gary Sheffield. Green scored when first baseman Kevin Millar threw wildly past Mike Redmond at the plate.
