Hillcrest drill team takes first place in Orlando meet
The Hillcrest High School drill team has taken first place in the Contest of Champions for Dance and Drill in Orlando, Fla."Contest of Champions is one of the most prestigious and competitive dance competitions in the nation," said Mechele Bosco, coach of the Hillcrest High drill team. "We have a great team that dedicated themselves and worked really hard to win this year."
The Hillcrest team took second place in the Contest of Champions in 1998 and 1999. It also took second place in the Utah state drill competition this year and won the competition in 1999.
The team is made up of 19 girls and two coaches.
The contest was held March 4 and 5 at Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando.
Waterford student awarded scholarship from foundation
Ian A. Thompson, a student at Waterford School in Sandy, has been named winner of the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation Achievement Scholarship.
The scholarship is awarded through the National Achievement Scholarship Program, a privately financed academic competition for outstanding black American students conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. He is among more than 700 outstanding students who will receive awards from among some 110,000 who entered by requesting consideration when they took the 1998 PSAT/NMSQT as high school juniors.
Thompson plans a career in medicine. He is a church organist/pianist, choir member, alto saxophonist, varsity soccer player, newspaper section editor and won second place in the region in debate.
Jordan debate team makes it 3 in a row at state contest
Jordan High School continues its reign with a third consecutive win in the state debate championship, Jordan School District has announced.
The team, coached by Rand Winward and Leslie Robinett, also garnered individual honors.
Award-winning students include: Bryan Brown and Randy Kipp, third place in policy debate; and Cheryl Christiansen, third place in student congress.
Ground broken for junior high on S.L County's west side
Magna and West Valley City neighborhoods can look forward to a new junior high school. Groundbreaking for the new building at 7600 W. 3600 South was held Tuesday.
The facility was designed by Pinegar Design Group and will be built by Comtrol Inc. for slightly under $17.4 million.
Construction will begin immediately and should be complete by June 2002.
The two-story building will accommodate a student population of about 1,110. There will be two gymnasiums and approximately 45 classrooms or teaching spaces.
The new school will draw its population from Brockbank and Hunter Junior Highs. Both schools are operating beyond capacity now.
Roy students take 4th place in national inventors contest
ROY -- Two Roy ninth-graders have won fourth place in the 18th annual Duracell/NSTA Invention Challenge.
Tyler Albright and Shayden Bertagnolli won a $1,000 savings bond for inventing a battery-operated device called the "Handi-Lifter."
More than 1,900 students submitted photos and plans for 1,436 prototype entries in the contest, the nation's largest and oldest competition for middle and high school inventors.
