A traffic accident on 700 East near 2400 South in Salt Lake City left one man dead and sent another person to the hospital Saturday night.
Killed was:
Carl Thomas Stanley, 43.
Witnesses state that at 9:10 p.m. Stanley was driving southbound in the outside lane of 700 East when a northbound car attempted a left had turn toward the freeway ramp to I-80. The northbound car clipped the back of Stanley's car causing his southbound vehicle to flip until it came to rest 50 feet up the road. Stanley was dead at the scene and a passenger in his car was taken to a local hospital in serious condition, a police report stated.
Witnesses said Stanley was traveling at a high rate of speed before the accident, but the report also indicated the northbound car turned on a red light. The report did not indicate if alcohol or drugs contributed to the accident or if charges or citations were filed against the uninjured northbound driver.
Gunman, accomplice sought in 2 robberies
Salt Lake County sheriff's deputies spent Monday night searching for two men in a pair of armed robberies.
"We have the same suspect description and same suspect vehicle, so we think it's the same people in both robberies," Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Sharp said.
The first robbery, at The Athletes Foot, 5616 S. Redwood Road, occurred at 9:08 p.m. when two men wearing red bandannas and black ski coats entered the store and demanded money. One suspect brandished a silver handgun and the two fled in a dark- color, medium-size car, which may have been a Ford Taurus, Sharp said.
About 45 minutes later, a lone gunman, wearing a red bandanna and black ski coat, entered the Burger King, 3975 W. 4700 South, and forced employees to give up money from the tills and a store safe.
The robber, along with a waiting driver, then fled in a car matching the description of the getaway car from the first robbery.
The gunman is described as a male in his late teens or early 20s, 6 feet tall and 185 pounds. The accomplice is shorter and heavy set, Sharp said.
S.L. man is wounded in a drive-by shooting
A Salt Lake man was wounded in a drive-by shooting Monday while walking along 400 East with his brother just after 5 p.m.
The siblings were strolling near 1850 South when a red or maroon Toyota Sport Utility Vehicle containing six or seven people pulled alongside. One male, described as 17 to 18-years-old, 5 feet 6 inches tall and 130 pounds, pulled out a gun and fired three or four shots at the victim. One shot hit the 21-year-old man in the upper leg, Salt Lake Police Lt. Terry Morgan said.
The man was taken to a local hospital to be treated for the injury, Morgan said. Police believe the shooting may be gang-related.
Witnesses said the vehicle's license plate was 619 LDR, but police said one of the letters or numbers may be inaccurate. Anyone with information should contact the Salt Lake City Police Department at 799-3000.
