Robert Rice, co-founder of Sabol & Rice, a heating and air conditioning company, passed away Thurs-day morning, March 30, 2000 at his residence in Salt Lake City. Mr. Rice was 85 years old.
He was born December 25, 1914 in Hatton, North Dakota. In 1942 he grad-uated from the University of Washing-ton in Seattle with a degree in engineer-ing. He received the Purple Heart for his service in World War II. After discharge he moved to Salt Lake City and married Esther Newbould. They had two daughters, Kris and Robin, who reside in Minneapolis/St. Paul.In 1958 Bob formed a business partnership with George Sabol. This 40 year union flourished, making the company a community leader. Their association expanded to include Roto Aire Filter Company and S&R Distributing. Joining ASHRAE in 1959, Bob was honored with the status of Life Member. Ashrae research has benefited from his ceaseless efforts.
Bob was also a leader and major contributor at Zion Lutheran Church. With his dedication and commitment, Zion was able to create new offices, classrooms, a private sanctuary and living quarters for the caretaker.
In Bob's free time he enjoyed golf at Willow Creek Country Club. He relished a good game of basketball and football. He was a loyal supporter of the University of Utah and was a member of the Crimson Club. He thrived on good friends, good laughs and top notch entertainment. Boating on Lake Powell created many happy scenes and memories.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Esther Newbould and his second wife, Marilyn Midthun. He is survived by his children, Kris Cosgrove and Robin Loes; and his three grandchildren, Nicole, Carson and Claire. Also survived by two stepdaughters, Lynn Wycoff and Cheryl Wesslink.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 6, 2000, at 2 p.m., at 1070 S. Foothill Drive. Family and friends may call from 1-2 p.m. prior to services. Interment at Wasatch Lawn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
