Some legends in the world of jazz will check into a Salt Lake hotel on Monday -- Clark Terry, James Moody and Marlena Shaw, as they prepare to perform in the Jazz at the Hilton series that evening. The show begins at 7:30.
Terry, who made his first trumpet out of a garden hose, is known for his years playing with Count Basie in the late 1940s and '50s. Born in St. Louis, he is said to have influenced many with his sound and tone, including Miles Davis. Also considered a pioneer of the fluegelhorn, Terry played for the NBC-TV Orchestra for 12 years before he left to form his own bands and continue recording.Grammy-nominated saxophonist James Moody gained notoriety in 1946 when he joined the bebop big band of Dizzy Gillespie, which included the likes of Milt Jackson and Thelonius Monk. The 75-year-old musician is best-known for his signature song, "Moody's Mood For Love," an improvisation on the chord progressions of "I'm in the Mood for Love." His work has taken him through extended touring schedules in locales ranging from Europe to Las Vegas.
Marlena started her singing career by appearing at Harlem's famed Apollo Theater, then by singing at clubs in and around New York City before recording her hit, "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," and signing on with Count Basie. Her performances have been said to blur the lines that separate jazz, soul, pop and R&B. Shaw was the the first female vocalist signed by Blue Note (in 1972) and toured with the late Sammy Davis Jr. during the same period.
