USU symposium April 13-15 on 'Body, Mind and Spirit'
"Body, Mind and Spirit: Culture and Health in America" is the topic of the 2000 Tanner Symposium to be held at Utah State University Thursday-Saturday, April 13-15. The public is invited but registration is required for the free conference.There will be four keynote speakers: Dr. Allen Neims, from the University of Florida College of Medicine, will explore the roots of Western medicine and talk about spirituality and relationship-centered care; Dr. Sherwin Nuland, author of "How We Die," from the Yale School of Medicine, will speak on the wisdom of the body; Dr. Robert Schneider, dean of the College of Maharishi Vedic Medicine, will explain the significance of the Maharishi Vedic approach to modern health care; and finally, Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord, associate dean of Dartmouth Medical School, will lecture from a Navajo surgeon's perspective of health.
The Rt. Rev. Carolyn Tanner Irish, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Utah, will give the welcoming remarks. In addition there will be panel discussions about music therapy, the role of faith and the power of prayer in healing, the social/cultural context of illness and more.
The Tanner Symposium began in 1995 and has brought a variety of experts to discuss topics ranging from liberty to Western stories and songs. For details and to register call 435-797-1200.
Student nurses group plans to meet in S.L. April 12-16
The 48th annual convention of the National Student Nurses Association will meet in Salt Lake City at the Salt Palace Wednesday-Sunday, April 12-16. The convention includes a variety of cutting-edge topics at both plenary and focus sessions, as well as the annual meetings of the House of Delegates. It will also include 200 exhibits, an informative career development/counseling center and more for the 2,500 undergraduate students registered to attend.
Stephanie Ferguson, Ph.D., RN, will be the keynote speaker. An associate professor of nursing at Howard University in Washington, D.C., she represents the National League for Nursing , consulting to the association.
Topics during the sessions include violence in the workplace, achieving excellence in nursing, critical nursing, understanding organ and tissue donation, learning through humor and imagery, spiritual care and much more.
