MAPLETON

The City Council is scheduled to adopt a tentative $3.2 million budget Tuesday for next fiscal year, which begins July 1.

City Administrator Keith Morey said the budget is about the same as the current funding package. However, the council may ask Police Chief Bret Barney for recommendations in cutting his budget, Morey said. The council last week considered and rejected disbanding the police force to contract with the Utah County Sheriff's Department. Officials said then they would look at the police budget. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 35 E. Maple.

OREM

OREM -- Students in trade-training programs at Utah Valley State College set a new school record by winning 16 gold medals at a statewide competition.

In addition, UVSC students accounted for 12 second-place and six third-place awards at the SkillsUSA-VICA contest.

The first place winners earn an invitation to compete in the national SkillsUSA-VICA competition to be held in Kansas City, Mo., in June.

SkillsUSA-VICA is a national organization made up of more than 250,000 high school and college students studying such technical fields such as drafting, food and beverage services, collision repair and carpentry.

PAYSON

The use of an overlay zone to allow a fourplex was recommended for denial by the city Planning Commission last week.

Mike Howard requested the overlay zone so he can build the fourplex at 848 W. 450 South. Payson created the overlay zone so small infill lots that fail to meet the requirements of current zoning can be developed. However, the commission said the fourplex failed to fit in with the neighborhood, associate planner Cheryl Hobbs said. Only one road serves the neighborhood of 72 homes and Payson Middle School. Planners also questioned whether the sewer could adequately serve a fourplex.

PROVO

City leaders planning a student housing complex are seeking public input this week.

An open house for residents to share their ideas for concept plans will be held Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Joaquin Elementary School. Residents there will be asked for their opinions on architecture, design and landscaping ideas for a proposed student village south of BYU.

The next day, city planners and a private consultant will incorporate residents' ideas during a planner's workshop. Residents can observe the process from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Provo City Hall, 351 W. Center. Additional input from residents also will be received during the workshop.

Planners then will hold a critique session Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. for residents to discuss whether the concept is what they desired. For more information, call 852-6402. An ordinance to better control when people reserve space to watch parades and other special events will again come before the City Council.

The ordinance was tabled at the last meeting. The ordinance is in response to people setting up chairs and marking space where they want to watch the Fiesta Days Parade as much as a week before the July 24 event. Officials say reserving space that early is a hazard. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 40 S. Main.
