Liza cancels shows due to hip problem
Liza Minnelli is in the hospital with a hip problem and has canceled upcoming tour dates for "Minnelli on Minnelli.""My show is physically demanding, and I was doing more damage with each performance and causing myself a great deal of pain. I simply could not continue with the show," she said in a statement Monday.
Minnelli, 54, has had two surgeries on her right hip. The replacements have hampered her mobility, and several of the show's numbers are done sitting in a chair.
The current ailment involves her left hip, the statement said.
Baldwin cuts ribbon at Hamptons stage
Actor and soon-to-be director Alec Baldwin lent his ribbon-cutting talents Monday to a new, 28,000-square-foot soundstage in the Hamptons, the well-to-do resort towns on eastern Long Island.
Ernie Schimizzi, vice president of the operation, called Pinewood West, said Hollywood talent floods into the Hamptons every year, so he hopes the facility will attract top directors and other luminaries.
Baldwin, who has a house with wife Kim Basinger in nearby Amagansett, will christen the soundstage later this month, when he directs and stars in "The Devil and Daniel Webster."
Jim Bakker preaches and pitches his book
Former televangelist Jim Bakker preached, prophesied and pitched his autobiography, "I Was Wrong," to about 300 people at a church in Greensboro, N.C.
Bakker, his wife, Lori Bakker, and his daughter, Tammy Sue Bakker, took turns touting their ministries: helping ex-gang members in Los Angeles ghettos; counseling women emotionally scarred by abortion; and saving lost souls in prison, where Jim Bakker served five years for bilking his PTL ministries of millions of dollars.
Bakker talked about deceit, sin, forgiveness and the rarity of his public appearances these days. He said he turns down nearly all speaking invitations but came to the nondenominational Christ Covenant Church on Sunday as a favor to Derek Floyd, a former PTL singer and Christ Covenant's minister of music.
