SPANISH FORK -- An escaped bull ran across two lanes of freeway traffic and later caused an accident on I-15 Monday afternoon that seriously injured a Nevada woman.
The bull was eventually shot and killed by police after efforts to corral the animal failed. At 2:40 p.m. the bull got loose from the Nebo Animal Clinic, 850 N. 300 West, and ran toward the freeway. Eventually, it crossed I-15 and started walking near the southbound lanes of traffic in a grassy area alongside the roadway working its way toward Payson, Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Chris Kramer said.
Spanish Fork Police officers, Utah County Sheriff's deputies and UHP troopers formed a corralling line in the emergency lane to keep the bull from venturing back onto the freeway.
Many motorists slowed down to examine the commotion and traffic began to accumulate in the area. A car carrying two Las Vegas women approached the slow-down at a high speed. The car's driver couldn't stop and slammed into the back of a Suburban.
The driver, who had her arm out the car window when the accident occurred, was taken by medical helicopter to University Hospital. She later had her arm amputated, Kramer said. The passenger was taken to Mountain View Hospital and was treated for less serious injuries. A woman and three young children in the Suburban were not seriously injured. The two victim's names were not released.
After the accident police decided the bull was causing an unsafe situation on the freeway and officers put it down, Kramer said.
