BOUNTIFUL -- Two Bountiful boys were in custody at the Farmington Bay Youth Detention Facility Tuesday after allegedly attempting to kidnap an Adelaide Elementary School student on her way to school Monday morning.

The boys, 15 and 16, one a South Davis Junior High student and the other a Bountiful High student, have not admitted to the attack but were positively identified by the 12-year-old victim from a police lineup, Davis County Sheriff's Lt. Dan Horton said. The girl reported the attack to school officials about 8 a.m. Monday. The girl told police that two boys stepped in front of her path, Horton said. She tried to step around them, but one of the boys grabbed her arm and tried to drag her off. The girl struggled free, scratching the boy who grabbed her, and ran to the school, 731 W. 3600 South, police say.

Police said they canvassed the area and through witness descriptions were able to tentatively identify the boys. A woman who knows the boys reportedly later brought them to the North Salt Lake Police Department, where Davis County deputies arrested them.

Neither boy was immediately cooperative, Horton said, but as of Tuesday morning, one of the young men had admitted to being in the area of the school Monday morning.

Davis County prosecutors were expected to look at the case Tuesday afternoon and were considering filing attempted kidnapping charges, Horton said.

The girl was not injured and had reportedly returned to school Monday afternoon.

In Salt Lake City, police are investigating an attempted abduction also involving a 12-year-old girl on her way to school. The girl was waiting for a bus at 800 South and 300 East when a man in a red four-door car pulled up and ordered her to get inside, police say.

The girl asked for assistance from a male passer-by, and the suspect drove off, Salt Lake Police Sgt. Jim Hill said. The girl reported the 7:40 a.m. incident when she arrived at school. Police have been unable to locate the suspect, described as a 40-year-old male with a mustache, Hill said.
