- Maitland Griffin Spencer, 90, died Saturday, April 28, 2000, at Garfield Memorial Hospital of causes incident to age.He was born April 21, 1910, to Orson Spencer and Alice "Allie" Francis Griffin. He married Nelda Alvey, Dec. 24, 1934. The marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple.
He lived his life in Escalante and was an active member of the LDS Church, holding positions in the Sunday School Organization and High Priest Quorum.
Maitland worked many years for the U.S. Forest Service as a Patrol Driver, grading roads throughout the Dixie National Forest. He also worked for Paul Steed, building and grading roads for his logging and sawmill
industry. He loved sports and music and was talented in both.
Maitland is survived by his wife, Nelda; son, Maitland Jr. (Earlene) Spencer (from a previous marriage); daughter-in-law, Sherree (Jerry) Roundy; ten grandchildren: Darrel (Rose) Spencer, Michelle (Barry) Peterson, Evan (Kathy) Spencer, Steve (Lorene) Spencer, David (Lori) Spencer, Kathryn (Bob) Bartel, Lynn (Pamela) Spencer, Richard (Suzanne) Spencer, Julianne (Rick) Brunson, Mike (Tara) Spencer; 37 great-grandchildren; sister, Alverda Liston. He was preceded in death by parents; sisters, Cora Spencer and Veda Mitchell; son, Lael Spencer; and a grandson, Glade Spencer.
Maitland was a good husband, father and grandfather as well as a good neighbor and friend. He will be missed by all of his family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 4, 2000, at 1 p.m. in the Escalante Stake Center, where friends may call on Thursday from 11a.m. -12:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Escalante Cemetery. Funeral directors, Neal S. Magleby & Sons Mortuary, Richfield, UT.
