White Sox 14, Indians 3

CHICAGO — Jose Valentin drove in a career-high six runs and fell a single shy of becoming the first AL player to hit for the cycle twice in one season, leading Chicago over Cleveland, 14-3.

Valentin hit a two-run homer in the first inning off Jaret Wright (3-3), a bases-loaded triple in the second and an RBI double in the third.

The White Sox, who led 14-0 after seven innings, opened a 2 1/2-game lead over the Indians in the AL Central. Cleveland manager Charlie Manuel held a pregame meeting, then saw his team lose for the fourth time in five games.

Carlos Lee homered and drove in three runs, Frank Thomas hit a pair of RBI doubles and Magglio Ordonez drove in two runs with two singles for Chicago.

Jim Parque (4-2) gave up two runs in 7 1-3 innings for his first win since April 27.

TWINS 10, RANGERS 5: At Minneapolis, Corey Koskie hit a bases-loaded triple, and Butch Huskey added a two-run double as Minnesota beat Texas.

The Twins, who lost all 12 games to Texas last season, have won four of the five games played between the two teams this year.

Joe Mays (2-6) won for the first time since May 3, and Midre Cummings and Cristian Guzman homered for Minnesota, which picked up its 12th comeback victory of the season.

YANKEES 8, RED SOX 3: At New York, Derek Jeter, who rented his own flight in order to get to the game, went 3-for-4 with a steal and RBI single for New York.

Jeter, who had been on the disabled list since May 11 because of a strained abdominal muscle, stopped an 0-for-14 slide, his longest since April 1997, with a third-inning single.

MARINERS 6, DEVIL RAYS 3: At St. Petersburg, Fla., John Olerud's two-run single snapped a fifth-inning tie and Seattle handed Tampa Bay its 11th loss in 13 games.

Brett Tomko (3-2) allowed three hits in five-plus innings, and the Mariners got a pair of RBI singles from Mark McLemore. Kazuhiro Sasaki pitched the ninth for his sixth save in seven opportunities.

TIGERS 4, BLUE JAYS 3: At Detroit, Deivi Cruz stroked an RBI single in the ninth inning to lift Detroit.

Doug Brocail (2-3) pitched the last 1 2-3 innings for the victory, holding the Blue Jays hitless after relieving Hideo Nomo.

ATHLETICS 4, ORIOLES 0: At Baltimore, Tim Hudson allowed one hit over 7 1-3 innings for his fifth straight victory.

The lone hit off Hudson was a fifth-inning single by Will Clark. The sinking liner to center popped out of the glove of a diving Terrence Long, who was prone as he attempted to make a sensational catch.

Hudson (6-2) walked four and struck out five. He was lifted after issuing a one-out walk to Greg Myers in the eighth.

ROYALS 6, ANGELS 5 (10): At Kansas City, Joe Randa's sacrifice fly scored Carlos Beltran to lift Kansas City past Anaheim.

David McCarty hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off Anaheim's ace reliever Troy Percival to tie the game for the Royals.
