TERRY JOHNSTON, author of "Lay Low the Mountains," and MATT BRAUN, author of "Kinch Riley," will sign copies of their books at Callister Co. Western Store, 3615 S. Redwood Road, Saturday, June 17, 2-4 p.m. The first book of historical fiction tells the story of the Nez Percé Wars, and the second is a novel about a young drifter involved with gunfighting.

ELAINE WEISS, author of "Surviving Domestic Violence: Voices of Women Who Broke Free," will sign and read from her book, Saturday, June 24, 1 p.m., Barnes & Noble, Fort Union.

CITY ART AND WRITERS LIVE! will hold an open reading, Wednesday, June 14, 7 p.m., at Main Salt Lake City Library. Those wishing to read must sign up by the start of the reading to be included in the program. Ballots for the Tenth Annual Melt-Down will be available at the reading. The Melt-Down is a sampling of favorite readers chosen by City Art audiences and will open the fall season on Sept. 13.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BOOK, a lecture and exhibit sponsored by The Utah Center for the Book, will be presented Wednesday, June 21, 7 p.m., at Main Salt Lake City Library. It is a presentation ranging from clay tablets to ancient scroll to illuminated manuscript to moveable type.

WRITERS AT WORK will hold its annual conference, July 9-14, at Westminster College. Twenty talented writers will participate in readings and panels during the course of the week. They include VALERIE MINERS, LAURIE FOOS, JERVEY TERVALON, DIONISIO D. MARTINEZ, CHARLES HARPER WEBB, REG SANER, W. SCOTT OLSEN, ANDREW HOFFMAN, JOEL LONG and RON CARLSON. Passes for the afternoon panels may be purchased for $75 for the week, and $395 covers the cost of the entire workshop. Readings are scheduled at 4 and 7:30 p.m. each day.
