Several hundred volunteers from Orem neighborhoods will celebrate Saturday's National Trails Day with shovels and picks as the city makes its first effort to construct Orem's portion of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail.

About 300 volunteers are expected to begin cutting brush around 7 a.m., said Jerry Ortiz, Orem recreation director. Volunteers plan to meet at 1700 N. Skyline Drive, where the U.S. Forest Service will be on hand to supervise and provide equipment. Eventually, Orem's portion of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail will extend from 2000 North to the city's park in Provo Canyon, a distance of about four miles, Ortiz said.

Bridal Veil Park, which has been closed since an avalanche four years ago, will reopen Saturday during Provo City Parks and Recreation's National Trails Day Festival.

Roger Thomas, director of Parks and Recreation, said Trails Day will mark the opening of Bridal Veil Park for public use and also acquaint residents to the trail opportunities that exist in Provo Canyon and along the Wasatch Front.

"Bridal Veil Park is where various trails intersect, so we thought it would be the ideal place for the festival," he said.

The park has been closed since a January 1996 avalanche destroyed the park's aerial tram.

Descendents of the first settlers from Iceland are looking for photos to place in a museum in that country.

The Icelandic Association of Utah wants photos of all 409 emigrants who left Iceland from 1854 to 1913, said Bliss Anderson of the association. Duplicates of the photos will be placed on the Icelandic Immigration Museum's Wall of Emigrants according to the date they left, she said. About 100 descendents from Utah and Seattle, Wash., will travel to Iceland for the dedication of the museum on July 3. Contact Anderson in Spanish Fork at 801-798-3781.
